Just got news about the line-up for DJF 2009, and my husband and I expect to return for a third Labor Day weekend.
In celebration of 30 years of presenting jazz, the Detroit Jazz Fest is honoring some leading families of jazz and Detroit’s own history of players and composers. Subtitled “Keepin’ Up with the Joneses” – a nod to the Detroit area’s legendary Jones brothers (Thad, Elvin and Hank)...also features these families -- the Brubeck family, John and Bucky Pizzarelli, the Clayton Brothers Quintet, and T.S. Monk in “Monk on Monk” – a performance honoring the legacy of his father, Thelonious Monk. Other performances by Chick Corea, Sheila Jordan, Christian McBride and Wayne Shorter. The complete line-up will be announced at the end of April.
In %26#39;07 we stayed in the Ren Cen and last year at a vrbo in Brush Park. I%26#39;ll be hanging out on the Detroit forum again as we work out arrangements for %26#39;09.

Great post, Pat. Thank you for putting the 30th Jazz Fest on the radar here. This is sure to be one of the most outstanding music events staged in Detroit.

Hey, Pat. Glad to see you here! And we%26#39;ll be glad to give suggestions and insight as always.
Cheers!

AB, I was hoping you and Tylerarb might still be here to guide me. Even though this will be our 3rd DJF, I expect I%26#39;ll have questions.
Were you thinking of doing the VRBO again? Just so you know, Zaccaro%26#39;s Market closed - a victim of the economy as well as circumstances - wrong place, wrong time.
Also, a few more hotels have opened up since you were here last - The Book Cadillac, the Doubletree Fort Shelby and the Greektown Casino Hotel. That%26#39;s off the top of my head... can%26#39;t think if there are others. The first two are probably the closest to the jazz activities at Hart Plaza.
Too bad about Zaccaro%26#39;s Market. The vrbo where we stayed in %26#39;08 was just blocks away, but because of Labor Day weekend hours were changed, so I didn%26#39;t shop there. We%26#39;ll probably return to the Ren Cen this year anyway.
The jazz festival will reveal more names at a press conference at the Guardian Building in Detroit on Wednesday, April 29.
Hi Pat Picks and welcome back to the forum and to Detroit.
If you just can%26#39;t wait until Labor Day weekend....
2009 Detroit Jazz Fest Artist-in-Residence John Clayton will perform with the Wayne State University Big Band on Friday, April 3, 7:30 PM, at The Music Box in the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Tickets are $20 at the DSO box office, and $23.50 if ordered by phone (313.576.5111) or online at detroitsymphony.com.
See http://www.detroitjazzfest.com/09lineup.html for the 2009 lineup, which was announced on April 29.
