New Buffalo vs. South Haven

My husband and I are thinking about escaping Chicago for a 2-night stay in southwest Michigan in May (soon!) and I%26#39;m seeking advice on which town is a better fit for us - South Haven or New Buffalo.

Since it%26#39;s May it will likely be chilly, so beaches aren%26#39;t a priority. We%26#39;re 30 (no kids) and planning on wine tasting, going for walks, reading on a porch and poking around shops. We%26#39;re casual people - we like good food, but nothing fancy. Getting out of the city and seeing some nature and countryside will be nice!

Any advice on what is the better fit as a home base (New Buffalo or South Haven or other?) for us? South Haven seems so much more established (more places to eat, shop) but I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s worth the extra drive from Chicago and the wineries.

Thanks for the help!

New Buffalo vs. South Haven

Since I believe the wineries are a bit further north than New Buffalo,MI, I vote for South Haven,MI.

New Buffalo vs. South Haven

I wish I knew more about South Haven to help you in your decison of where to stay but I agree that the wineries are more north (and North East) of New Buffalo. There are a few antique places along U.S. 12 and some shops downtown but other than that and the casino, there isn%26#39;t a whole lot going on there. Good place to stop for a bite to eat in New Buffalo is Redamak%26#39;s. It%26#39;s very casual and the burgers are really good.

About 15 miles or so north of South Haven is Saugatuck...lots of cute little shops, restaurants and bed and breakfasts with big porches to sit on and read. :o) I%26#39;m sorry I couldn%26#39;t help you that much but just wanted to mention Saugatuck.

Hope you have a great weekend getaway!

Now see, I would point out that Tabor Hill, The Round Barn, LemonGrass, and several other fabulous wineries are further south... MUCH closer to New Buffalo than South Haven. They are all south of the Stevensville / St. Joe area.

However, I do agree with the arguement that Saugutuck is closer to SH.

If you want to shop, Saugutuck is your destination, but if you want a really great day of wineries, with some shopping mixed in.... I would head to New Buffalo / St. Joe area.

I would say that New Buffalo is very established, has a few chains or some great B %26amp; B%26#39;s... and if you want Chains instead, stay in St. Joe or Stevensville. However, I think you will be thrilled with a weekend in the NB area... it%26#39;s only 1:15 from downtown!

I%26#39;m sorry I was a little off with the winery locations. I always thought they were further north. I found a nice map that shows the locations of them.

I personally like New Buffalo go there often to Four Winds but I think it%26#39;s prettier in Saugatuck. :o)
