My husband and I are thinking about escaping Chicago for a 2-night stay in southwest Michigan in May (soon!) and I%26#39;m seeking advice on which town is a better fit for us - South Haven or New Buffalo.
Since it%26#39;s May it will likely be chilly, so beaches aren%26#39;t a priority. We%26#39;re 30 (no kids) and planning on wine tasting, going for walks, reading on a porch and poking around shops. We%26#39;re casual people - we like good food, but nothing fancy. Getting out of the city and seeing some nature and countryside will be nice!
Any advice on what is the better fit as a home base (New Buffalo or South Haven or other?) for us? South Haven seems so much more established (more places to eat, shop) but I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s worth the extra drive from Chicago and the wineries.
Thanks for the help!
South Haven vs. New Buffalo
i%26#39;m from nw indiana so i drive past new buffalo to get to so haven...its less than an hr further and there are several wineries along the way...tabor hill, julian (just a tasting room) and others whos names escape me right now but I%26#39;m sure are on the michigan web site...
new buffalo is pretty but I don%26#39;t care for the beach scene as much...the walk from the town to beach is not as fun either...i go occasionally when i%26#39;m pressed for time but its not a fav spot for me
so haven has the north %26amp; south beaches to walk along with a great pier...the downtown is compact with a little (and I mean little ) show that still shows first run movies dirt cheap with great popcorn and sherman ice cream in $1 cups!! Clementines is a fun place to eat...phoenix inn is great for breakfast...julias is a coffee shop with intellegista (sp??) coffee and free wifi...lots of interesting shops...i like the toy stores, antique malls, and props especially...and dulcys is full of all kinds of crazy kitsch!!
there is a maritime museum and a small art institue if you care to get educated...
and the big blue water there is incredible!
guess you can tell who I vote for!!
