Family hotel suggestion

I am looking for a family hotel on Mackinac Island for my family. We have 2 children ages 12 and 10. My 12 year old would like something near a beach (walking distance). Top price around $250-$210 a night. What would you recommend? Thanks.

We were thinking about visiting end of July. July 18th - 23rd.

Family hotel suggestion

I%26#39;m sure you realize there are no sandy beaches on the island and swimming isn%26#39;t what most people want to do when visiting. That said, most any of the hotels and inns are within walking distance to the shoreline.

While Mission Point has a wonderful lawn near the shore, kids activities including hay rides and a pool, the rooms and resort is, at best, a two-star hotel. We stayed there last summer with extended family and I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it for the rooms, restaurants or staff. The kids, on the other hand, enjoyed it. (You can read my review of Mission Point here on TripAdvisor). Mission Point is also a bit out of town making it a chore every time you need to go out to eat, shop or do most anything.

I%26#39;d suggest any of the downtown inns. Nearly all of them welcome families since that is the bulk of the visitors to the island. The Lake View and Chippewa come to mind as possibilities.

Other regulars on this forum will likely have additional suggestions in the next few days. Have a great trip!

While we usually rent a condo when our kids are with us on the Island, I would make a different recommendation for you, based on the preferences you listed. In addition to the other suggestions listed above, I would recommend Island House (great location, good breakfasts, indoor pool), or Main Street Inn (AWESOME rooms).

Check out mackinac.com and go to accomodations for links to these hotels and others.

Contrary to the earlier poster, I would put in a good word for Mission Point. The quality of the resort is just fine, fitting a nice niche between the Grand, which is outrageously expensive, and the downtown inns and B%26amp;Bs. It is especially suited for families, offering a kids club, family suites, and a pool.

It is a little bit of a hike (literally, if you are walking) but if you are overnighting on the island then you can take things slowly. Take a horse-drawn taxi if you prefer. I find the slight distance an advantage. It is its own destination. And it isn%26#39;t that far really. You can walk down the street to town for any reason, or no reason. It%26#39;s not like you%26#39;re on the far side of the island; you%26#39;re only on the far side of town.

I forgot to mention that MP is running a special if you book by May 1. They give it the unfortunate name of Economy-Buster. 2 nights, 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners and ferry tix for a family of (up to)5 for $399. If you add a third night you get it at half the listed price. A pretty good base deal.

The price escalates as you start improving it. I just made a reservation for 3 nights mid-summer, upgrading to $599 to get a family suite (no view but 2 rooms), adding the 3d night, and paying a $50 surcharge for booking on a weekend. It was maybe $850 altogether. Not cheap but less I think than the cost of one night at the Grand.

I have fond memories of the Island House as a kid. You get a true Island experience. So I second that recommendation.

IMO the entire island is a family destination. It%26#39;s hard to find a more wholesome and safe place to go for a family vacation. Pick a place that fits your budget and book it. When you stay on Mackinac Island, it really doesn%26#39;t matter which hotel you%26#39;re sleeping in. If you%26#39;re doing it right, you%26#39;ll be out all day, you%26#39;ll eat where you feel lik eating. There%26#39;s something for almost every taste and budget. And you%26#39;ll go back to your hotel and go to bed at night. If you%26#39;re hanging out at your hotel in the day time, you%26#39;re wasting your time at Mackinac. And you%26#39;ll love how it changes after that last ferry leaves in the late afternoon.

Lakeview is right in town but off a little so it%26#39;s fairly quiet. Across from the water where there is an open space to walk/sit and watch the boats %26amp; people. They have an indoor pool (my 7 yr. loves!) and hot tub (I love!). we stayed there 2 nights last August and plan to stay 3 nights this August. We liked it a lot, just didn%26#39;t care for their restuarnt Goodfellos.
