We will travel to the island for the first time on June 12, 2009. I have seen the options for ferry and comment on travel to hotels. We would like additional comment on where to get on the ferry- Mackinac Ciy or north and is the luggage transported separate from the traveler?
Thanks in advance...
Mackinac Island travel
The ferry cost is the same from either side. The view and photo ops for the Straits of Mackinac and Bridge are better on the Mackinaw City route.
The luggage is loaded onto carts and carried on the same ferry. You can keep small bags with you.
Most hotels can arrange transport of your bags from the ferry to the hotel.
Have fun! I will be up there the same date.
Mackinac Island travel
We like to go to St. Ignace to board the ferry. We love driving across the bridge and find that the ferries are not as busy and parking is far better and easier from that side.
kdets89 and lighthouselovertoo both have good points, so it all depends on what you prefer. If you haven%26#39;t ever driven across the Mighty Mac, it%26#39;s a great view and worthwhile few dollars.
I like St. Ignace because it is smaller and we usually take Arnold Line from there. It%26#39;s very convenient. The Mackinac County Airport is also just a mile or so north of the ferry docks in the event you had to fly over or back for some reason.
This past Labor Day, we opted to stop in Mackinaw City and took Sheplers. It was very convenient to unload the bags right onto the luggage cart and have the staff park the car. They even held the ferry a couple of minutes so some late arrivals didn%26#39;t have to wait for the next boat.
You%26#39;re really set in either city, so it comes down to your preference.
By the way, I%26#39;ll be on the island that same weekend as well! Hope the weather cooperates for all of us.
