Mackinac Island and area

My husband and I are planning a trip to this area in June - We live in New England and would probably fly into Detroit - We are looking for interesting sights and locations to stop on our way from Detroit to Mackinac Island. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Our schedule is very flexible and time is not a factor. (or would we see alot more if we were to fly into Chicago?) Places to stay along the way would also be much appreciated. We are not at all familiar with this area. Sound like Frankenmuth is an almost must stop.

Mackinac Island and area

Definitely stop in Frankenmuth if you fly into Detroit.

How many days do you have? That is what I need to know first! I know you said flexible and time not a factor, but how far off the straight path do you want to veer?

Naw-skip Chicago....lol.

Mackinac Island and area

Thanks for your quick reply - - Time wise we have anywhere from 10 days to 2 weeks or more if there is enough places to see and things to do - And we are open to however far off the straight path we need to travel to see things. As long as we are a distance from home we would like to take advantage and see as much as we can of this part of the US - Some suggestions I have seen on TA are: Hartwick Pines State Park, Gaylor and of course Frankenmoth (and Indian River) We know nothing about these areas so suggestions would be welcome. Thnaks

In the hopes of not cutting too much time away from the island, I have a few suggestions:

The Henry Ford (http://www.thehenryford.org) museum and village in Dearborn is near Detroit and worth a visit.

A stop in Traverse City (http://www.visittraversecity.com/) and nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes results in a nice ride up Hwy. 31 to Mackinaw City and the bridge.

Finally, a trip to the UP and to Sault St. Marie to visit the Soo Locks (http://www.soolocks.com) might also be of interest.

Have a great trip!

I would fly into Detroit or Flint. Rent your car. Drive up I-75 to US 23 and that will take you up to Frankenmuth. 2 days there is enough. Shopping, eating a famous chicken dinner, maybe a visit to the military or history museum, and of course, Bronner%26#39;s-the famous, huge Christmas store. There are other things to do there, but those are the main attractions. There is also a paddlewheel boat ride you can take, but I%26#39;d pass-I feel it is a waste of money, personally. There are countless festivals that occur here also, so you might want to check out their website before coming and see if there is anything going on you might like to take part in. They also have horse and carriage rides, but since you are bound for MIsland, well, skip that....!

I would then take a drive up to US 23 and drive along Lake Huron. There are a few small, cute towns to explore, lighthouses, state parks, marinas to walk around, ice cream stops, etc. You can do this in about a 5 or 6 hour leisurely drive and get to Mackinaw City late in the day. Tawas is a good stop for a hour or two-lighthouse, great beaches, a little shopping.

If you choose not to go that way, then head due north on I-75. Grayling is where Hartwick Pines State Park is. It is a great nature/historical park, that introduces the visitor to the logging industry that was such a large part of our history. There are lumberman buildings to explore, a nice little chapel, and a walkway thru the virgin pine forest. A nice nature center. $7 to enter or you can buy a MI state park annual pass, but at this time of the new year, I am not sure how much they will be, maybe $25.

Gaylord is a nice stop for either a meal, or an ice cream, or to stretch your legs or to load up on supplies if needed. There is a Walmart and other such stores.

Indian River. I am not real familiar with Indian River, and I will let someone else help you with that. The Cross in the Woods is a nice stop, but it has been years since we have been there, and so I won%26#39;t make it a suggestion. Maybe someone else can help with that if there are other reasons to stop in this nice little town.

Mackinac Island: horse and carriage tour; Fort Mackinac; fudge; biking around the island if interested; tour the Grand Hotel ($15) and its gardens; dine; sit on a beach and stare at the beautiful waters; watch the huge ore boats go by; check out the back deck of the local library; golf/horseback ride if interested; skip stones; walk and walk; visit the cemetery (yeah, I know but do so); butterfly house; personal tour with horse and carriage (takes you to different areas that normal tours do not go); Arch Rock on your own power-bike or walk, that way you can stay as long as you like, as well as see some of the inner island on your own time. Want more info, ask. LOL.

I will be back.

If your schedule allows (or forces) a day in the Detroit area, then the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village is a great place to spend the time. You can learn more about the history of Detroit and our nation%26#39;s industrial revolution there, than at any other place I know of.

I would then either head up into the UP and see the Soo Locks (Sault Ste. Marie), then drive over to Tahqaumenon Falls State Park and view the waterfalls, take a short hike, eat at the restaurant there. Head to Whitefish Point to the Great Lake Shipwreck Museum, THIS is a wonderful, small museum, very touching. There are also beaches here and trails to explore, as well as a lighthouse. If still want to see more of UP, head over tO Munising and take a cruise out on Lake Superior with a boat ride that goes past the Pictured Rocks. Beautiful.

I%26#39;d then drive south and back to Mackinaw City via US 2, which will take you along Lake Michigan. This is a beautiful drive with lots of stopping points-just pull over to the shoulder and go for a walk along the beaches.

Absolutely head down to Harbor Springs, M-119, Petoskey and Charlevoix. All offer beautiful viewS of Lake Michigan, shopping, dining, beaches, parks, museums, boat watching, fishing, swimming-all are worth a stop. This could be done in a day, better to break it up and see them for a couple days.

Traverse City: well, you must go. Access Old Mission Peninsula; Leelanau Peninsula; wineries; golf; fishing; beaches; little towns that have wonderful dining and shopping; boat rides; art museums or galleries; parks; lighthouses; Music Museum for something a bit different; Sleeping Bear Dunes (a national lakeshore); harbors; great picnic spots; cherry farms/apple farms/fruit markets; rocky shores; Pierce Stocking Drive with fabulous views (part of Sleeping Bear); canoeing.....what do you like to do? LOL.

From there, you could drive down the entire length of Michigan and see more small towns; more sand dunes and wonderful beaches. However, I would think with your time frame, I%26#39;d head to Chicago! Visit for 3 days or so ( or more) and then drive back to Detroit to catch your flight home. Don%26#39;t know if it is all feasible for you, but if it is, I don%26#39;t think you will be disappointed. If you want more detailed info on any city: hotels, restaurants, parks, attractions, be sure and ask us!!

HAVE FUN!!

Yes, if you like history at all, I%26#39;d stay in Detroit upon arrival for one night and take in The Henry Ford as RedRox suggests. Wonderful place.

Thanks for all the great info - we have booked our air flight from 5/30 to 6/9 (to/from Detroit)We will probably head straight to MI or MC for our 1st night and plan to stay 3-4 nights (?) in this area - Then we will head to Traverse City for 2 nights (?) to see sleeping Bear and other points of interest in this area - We also want to spend a night or 2 in Frankenmuth are before heading home - I%26#39;m unsure about booking lodging because we don%26#39;t know how much time will be needed in any particular area - Any ideas or suggestions from anyone as to how much time we will need in any location for optima sightseeing??? Looking for lots of advice as to what to see during our stay. Thanks

I would spend at least 2 days on the Island, 2 days in Traverse City, another day in the general Traverse City area checking out some of the pretty towns along Lake Michigan, then head over to Frankenmuth. You can easily see the best of Michigan%26#39;s little Bavaria in just a day or so.

But I would also add a trip up to the Soo and the Whitefish Point/Taquamenan Falls area. It really is spectacular country, very scenic with a great deal of history. A day in the Soo will give you a feel for how Michigan (and Chicago!) came into being. There isn%26#39;t much to see in the way of attractions there (beyond the Locks) but spend some time chatting with the locals (go to Antlers and Frank%26#39;s Place). You won%26#39;t meet a nicer bunch of people (no, I don%26#39;t know any of them personally). They certainly carry on the pioneer spirit that founded Michigan when it was wild and untamed. Any time you can spend in the UP is quality time. It really is one of the last, best wildernesses once you%26#39;re away from the tourist spots.

Visiting movie sets in Michigan

Mackinac Island has long been a popular destination for fans of the movie, Somewhere in Time, but this article highlights other Michigan locations that have appeared in motion pictures: mlive.com/travel/index.ssf/2009/05/detroit_f…

Among other places to visit, the article says that this summer there are special events for the 50th anniversary of ';Anatomy of a Murder.'; The movie stared Jimmy Stewart and was filmed in Marquette, Ishpeming and Big Bay. There will be a reunion of those involved with the film (July 1), the debut of ';Anatomy %26#39;59,'; a documentary on the making of the film (June 29), special walking tours, an ';Anatomy of a Murder'; trivia night at a U.P. brew pub, and more.

I read the book (based on a real UP event) a few years ago, but have never seen the movie.

When I saw ';Gran Torino'; a few months ago, I%26#39;d wondered if it would generate some visitors to see the Detroit area locations used in the movie.

Visiting movie sets in Michigan

Anatomy of a Murder was nominated for seven academy awards including best picture and best actor (Jimmy Stewart) losing to Ben Hur and Charlton Heston in 1959.

The American Bar Association listed the movie in its top 12 of all time trial movies.

It is classic that, though slightly dated, still holds up today and features one of Jimmy Stewart%26#39;s really great performances...

Visiting movie sets in Michigan

You are going to see that I am about to post a thread regarding the best movies shot in Michigan. I am driving a group of 15/16 year old girls to Michigan this summer to celebrate my daughter%26#39;s 16th birthday. I thought it would be fun for them to see movies shot in the places they will be visiting. I%26#39;m glad to see that so many of the movies are current! Moms

Moms, I have done the same thing before trips, but have you ever made a trip because of having seen the place in a movie?

';Against All Odds'; resulted in my traveling to Cozumel and Tulum.

Caution-Jacks Livery on Mackinac Island

I must warn all of you and especially parents that take there children to Jacks Livery, when you sign the waiver to ride make sure you check out there equipment first because they are not responsible for faulty equipment and they do not take proper care of there saddles. I broke my back and have had 2 surgeries riding one of there horses due to faulty equipment, there saddle was dry rotted and split in two pieces while riding. They told me they would cover my medical expenses which totaled more then $25,000, they never did and left me indebt trying to pay off the doctors and hospitals and to this day my back still is not correct and I have constant pain.

Caution-Jacks Livery on Mackinac Island

Caution: Beware of first time posters who have only complaints about a specific business. They are frequently disgruntled employees.

If this post is genuine, it is very unfortunate and sad, but I am quite suspicious....Moms

Caution-Jacks Livery on Mackinac Island

I am totally suspicious; I am totally confident that it is well, I won%26#39;t express MHO on this post, Moms. :)

Looks like a lie to me. This post will disappear in a few days.

Oh I am far from a past employee actually I design and Engineer products that product this great country of ours. So if you don%26#39;t want to take the warning then so be it and if you would like pictures of the scar I would be more then happy to send you some. I just don%26#39;t want this happening to other people or even worse yet to any children.

Hey Mom I am not a liar I am just looking out for people like you especially if you have children because if that happened to them they would not be walking today and yoour medical bills would be allot worse then $25k and they would not be responsible for any of it.

I never accused you of lieing....

I am sorry for your situation. Good luck. Moms

tymetraveler why don%26#39;t you say your MHO? so because I decided to tell my story its a lie? I actually work Engineering products that protect this great country of ours and I just don%26#39;t want to see any more people get hurt. Here is a letter and a case number that was written to the Judge on the case:

Honorable Charles H. Stark

I am writing to you today in regards to File No. 07-6345-NO, I don’t quite understand how a company can get away with not being responsible for the well being of there customers and knowingly letting there patrons ride there horses with faulty equipment that is not properly maintained during the winter months, leather products can not be left in a barn all winter in the constant temperature changes without being maintained and conditioned.

I guess what is being said here is that I can own a company and have my customers sign a Release form send them out in a product that I know is faulty and they get killed or seriously injured and I have nothing to worry about, how can the law protect that? I am very confused by this, the Release form I signed does not say that I release them from having faulty equipment, I understand that if I was out there acting reckless that I am responsible but not for equipment that I expect them to keep maintained.

After my accident I approached them and they said they would cover my bills and also sent me a letter stating that, that is why I chose to go after them legally because they did not, I have never sued anyone in my life and I am not looking to get rich I am just looking for them to cover my bills and pay for some suffering, and I wouldn’t have sued them if they would have just kept there word. I have been thru 2 surgeries in the last 9 months and wore a body cast from my waist to my shoulders for 3 months, I had 3 cracked vertebrae’s and a herniated disc, till this day I am still in pain and probably will be the rest of my life and for what? It hurts for me to sit for any period of time and I never get a full nites rest and I don’t believe in taking drugs.

Your honor imagine if I was a younger child and I was crippled for life, the only reason the doctors said I was walking was because of the shape that I was in, I can no longer participate in some of my favorite activities because of the accident. So please if you could explain it to me in simple terms how this could happen I would really appreciate it.

So if you want to call the court and look uo that case number we will see who%26#39;s lying.

BrokenBack,

Your problem is showing up in our online community, having never participated in it ever before, and making extreme statements. You haven%26#39;t established your credibility or shown an interest in participating in our forum other than to make those strong statements.

This is a common pattern and gets old. Those of us that have been here for a while learn to discount those kinds of posters, whether they are strongly for or against a place. The more responsible members of this forum try to point out drive by posters, so that someone that reads the post, but is new to the forum will know not immediately assume that they are all true.

I hope your pains lessen.

Lighthouselovertoo: So what is your point? just because I haven%26#39;t had the time to post on here because I have a career and have been busy means that it is not credible? Why don%26#39;t you call the court house and look up the case number and we will see who is credible, it%26#39;s public knowledge, I gave the Judges name and the case number, so do some research before you critisize. Do you have any idea what it is like to break your back and to not do some of the things you love to do because of the fault of someone else? if I was out screwing around and it was my fault I would have never said a word, but this was the fault of the Livery and they are not held accountable, I would not wish this pain on anyone.

Thank you. Your reply tells me all I need to know.

Have a great life!

Hotel Reviews Ruin Reputation

I have visited Mackinaw City several times, though not in the last 5 years. It used to be such a small little burg--so so nice. Now it seems to have turned into a tourist trap. it wouldn%26#39;t be so bad if you could trust where to stay. I am wanting to visit for the Lilac Festival this year(I have been saving money for 5 years), but certainly don%26#39;t want to waste my money and have a bad time from hidden price increases, double charges, dirty rooms, and mold.

My son has terrible allergies and I definitly need non smoking rooms. WHERE should I stay? Even though I love Mackinaw City, I am considering St. Ignace after reading all of the bad hotel reviews. The town needs to stop allowing more hotels to be built, unless they are a year round business.

Anyone with a good recommendation for a 52 year old woman and 2 teens?

Hotel Reviews Ruin Reputation

See the other thread on here for Hotels in June 2009. We discussed quite a few of the hotels and ultimately I decided on the Clearwater Lakeshore which seems to be non-smoking.

Hotel Reviews Ruin Reputation

Deer Head Inn B%26amp;B is smoke free, within easy walking distance to all of Mackinaw%26#39;s attractions (just over a block to Sheppler%26#39;s ferry) and serves a wonderful breakfast.

One thing to remember about online reviews is that people will tend to post the negative much more frequently than the positive. Take a look over at the airline forum for a good example where you will see ';never fly airline xxxxx'; posts constantly, but rarely a good review. Also remember that often the hidden price increases, double charges, etc. are often really people that never read the details of their reservations in the first place and are upset the hotel followed the policy they agreed to at the time of booking.

I have little trust in any review (good or bad) where I haven%26#39;t had a chance to read what the person has said about other places. That is why I pay a lot more attention to the comments here in the forums, than to the reviews on TripAdisor.

The people that own most of the large motels in Mackinaw have set up websites that look like non-partisan sites with info and comments about Mackinaw City. Carefull looking will show that those sites list only their motels and list only possitive reviews that may or may not be from customers.

Stay in St Ignace, Best Western Harbour Point.

All non smoke (except for the nightly beach bonfire). Indoor pool and a nice outdoor pool. Nice clean place

It took me a while to catch on to checking a reviewer posting history, but since then, I have learned to glean a lot of info from doing that. And in the long run, unless a place has consistently good or bad reviews, you won%26#39;t really know until you have tried a place, or know someone personally that has and you trust their opinion.

I always %26#39;throw out%26#39; the most glowing report (probably an owner or employer) and the most damning report (stuff happens).

Most of the %26#39;newer%26#39; hotels in St. Ignace/Mackinaw City are pretty nice. It%26#39;s the older motels that tend to be a bit on the shoddy side (not all, but many). Unfortunately, the Straights area isn%26#39;t a big enough year-round destination to support keeping all the hotels open, and even the few that do stay open don%26#39;t fill up in the winter.

We were up there this past winter and stayed at the Comfort Inn, which was just fine.

Weekend getaway with my dog?

My husband and I live in Indianapolis. We%26#39;d like to drive up to Michigan for a long weekend trip with our dog (he%26#39;s a big dog, 80lbs) this summer. I%26#39;d especially like to be able to take the dog to someplace he can go swim in Lake Michigan, since he loves to swim.

Any suggestions? We%26#39;re just looking for a relaxing weekend getaway, maybe with some nice scenery, hiking and beach time or gardens. I%26#39;d really like it if we could find someplace that has lots of outdoor cafes and such so we could have our dog with us all the time. We%26#39;d also need somewhere that has a hotel that accepts large dogs.

Thanks!

Weekend getaway with my dog?

Here is a website that may be helpful.

I love Traverse City. I typed in that city and got two dog friendly hotels. The Quality Inn is across from Grand Traverse Bay. Try some other cities along the Lake Michigan shore (Grand Haven for instance....) Good luck. Moms

Weekend getaway with my dog?

I just noticed that the Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island welcomes pets! It%26#39;s called Pets at the Point. Here is their special:

Moms

It%26#39;s been several years, but we stayed with our two golden retrievers at the Holiday Inn in Grand Haven. From there we hiked in Grand Haven State Park and Muskegon State Park. Maybe also P.J. Hoffmaster. Great dunes hiking in the area. The public beaches don%26#39;t allow dogs on Lake Michigan, and they need to be on leash on the trails.

We also rented a cabin (found through vrbo.com) somewhere north of there, closer to Silver Lake but not quite that far north. The beach was private, so the dogs could run and swim. We had a bbq in a fire pit on the beach one night. There wasn%26#39;t much nearby restaurant-wise, but you could do takeout or just cook in. It%26#39;s been too many years for me to remember the specifics, but you can search vrbo by area, and pet-friendly icons make it easy to find what you need.

I just returned from my trip to Gaylord and The Bob Inn was awsome. The house was a little dated but super clean. It had so many extra, hot tub on the huge deck, bbq, fireplace, pooltable, dart board and lots of games and cards. Also the staff at Great Northern Rentals were AWSOME. Amy and Pam were so friendly and accomadating. Even after we booked they still answered many questions and also booked my tee off times after recomending the course. So if you have the chance check out Great Northern Rentals. I know I will use them again. Thanks Pam and Amy for making my weekend so great.

    Beware!!

I stayed on the Fairview Inn in Okemos due to being a smaller area and a ';better'; part of town. When I arrived, I was told to park in the back due to being closer to my room. On my last day when I got ready to leave, I found my car vandalized. I had the only Wisconsin plates in the back parking lot. There are NO cameras and all the hotel had to say was ... sorry... I hope that when people are wanting to bring money into their community along with jobs... they keep things like this in mind.. Well.. the people in Wisconsin thank the person or people in Michigan... you just gave someone four days of work on my car... and the hotel... will not be given my business or anyone elses that I know.. I am happy for the internet... this will reach others.. I would think that the hotel would comp me one night.. to at least help cover my deductibe for all the damage... oh yeah.. it isn%26#39;t their problem... sorry.. I then went to the Howard Johnson on the other side of town... half the price.. twice the hospitality....

    Beware!!

Sorry for your problem, but are you honestly telling us that there is no crime in Wisconsin???? Your blaming this entire state???

I very much doubt that thieves were targeting you because you are from Wisconsin. More likely there was something of value that caught their eye. Was was the exact damage done?

I had a car stolen once at a really nice golf resort near Cleveland. Turns out that the thieves knew how to hotwire that model of car and that is why they targeted my car. I never considered holding the hotel, city of Cleveland or state of Ohio responsible. I also had my car hit while parked a month ago in Detroit. I don%26#39;t blame the city or restaurant it was parked in front of - I blame the drunk that plowed into it.

    Beware!!

My car was keyed from one side, across the trunk and began on the other side. Nothing was stolen, no windows broken.. Just vandalism. I am not saying there is no crime in Wisconsin, but if you stay in a nice hotel, you expect some security or cameras. I didn%26#39;t even have the nicest vehicle in the parking lot. I guess you come to the conclusion. I had no interaction with anyone so no one had any reason to be upset with me personally.

Well, ....I%26#39;d be pissed to. And, ...after reading this, ....I will not ever stay at a motel that doesn%26#39;t have security cameras trained on the parking lot. A motel patron should be able to assume that their car is reasonably safe in the parking lot. Not to mention personal safety. I will not be staying at this motel.

Most hotels and motels deny any responsibility for your car and its contents. You will always see signs in lots informing you of this. Same for shopping malls, airports, and most any other public space.

Assuming your car is being taken care of by anyone else is a mistake. Make sure you park in well lit areas, don%26#39;t leave valuables in sight, ...

Unfortunately there are jerks in this world that like to damage other peoples property for fun. Cameras would do no good. First of all, you would have to have someone monitoring the cameras 24/7. Second, how long would it have taken for this person to key your car - 15-20 seconds? On camera it would have just looked like the owner walking around it. Even if they did catch it on tape, how are you going to identify, prosecute, etc. the person from a grainy video taken from 50 feet away in a dimly lit parking lot?

I guess I would have not been as upset if the person behind the desk had not told me where to park. I feel that if someone is giving you directions where you need to park... they need to take some responsibility. There are NO signs that say anything about not being responsible. Again... I would have parked in the front of the hotel and always had.. and paying my deductible would not be asking that much. I just feel victimized and feel that I got very little resolution. I was not asking them to pay the whole bill.. but I got no slack at all.

That is too bad that happened to your car. I would not be happy either. I remember on a trip to Florida my parents had their rims stolen off their car one night at a hotel in Louisville. When I drive to a hotel one of my main requirements prior to booking is finding one that advertises 24 hr on site parking security. Most hotels that offer valet have this as do others. I agree that cameras really don%26#39;t solve everything.

What a terrible thing to have happen! But keeping it in perspective, vandalism happens everywhere, including Wisconsin. I know Okemos very well (have lived nearby for 40 years) and it%26#39;s not exactly a hotbed of criminal activity, no matter which %26#39;side of town%26#39; you%26#39;re on.

Very unfortunate there was no comp from the hotel, but it may be a bit harsh to call the community%26#39;s safety and worthiness of jobs/business into question.

OK, perhaps I don%26#39;t understand your grip. Clearly it is upsetting when vandalism happens to a car. That is terrible that it happened. The part I don%26#39;t understand is how the hotel should comp you when they merely told you that you should park close to your room and that room is in the back of the hotel. Are you suggesting that the hotel somehow must have known there would be criminal activity and told you to park there nonetheless?

I travel extensively worldwide. I drive in foreign countries and all regions of this country. I find that it is common practice for hotels to suggest parking convenient to my room. If my car is somehow dinged or vandalized or even hit in the parking lot, I don%26#39;t think it is the hotel%26#39;s responsibility. Unless the hotel had specific knowledge of vandalism in the area and still instructed you to park there, I just don%26#39;t think it is their fault. When I was in graduate school, I was assigned a parking lot in which to park. I parked my car precisely where I was instructed to park it. One evening I came out of class to find that my car was stolen. It never occurred to me that the University was responsible for my repairs or even my deductible simply because they told me where to park. It is unreasonable for the hotel to be held responsible for a random criminal act, again, absent specific knowledge of previous criminal activity.

I also agree that Okemos is generally a very safe town. It is actually quite affluent, but, alas, ill behaved teenagers or full-fledged criminals could be present even in Okemos. And to suggest that you were somehow the target because of your Wisconsin plates may be a stretch. I am frequently in the Okemos/East Lansing area with New Jersey tags and do not find I am any more a target than the local population.

Again, I am very sorry this happened. I am hopeful it doesn%26#39;t happen to you again. Moms

Very well stated Moms, I totally agree with everything you have written.

I have a feeling that since Wisconsin is in the Big 10 and so is Michigan State that a Sconsin tag might be a bit more of a target in the Lansing metro area compared to a Jersey one. Just a thought. I%26#39;ve seen cars get smashed on game weeks simply because of their tags. It is unfortunate and a cowardly move by those who partake in such activity but none the less it is an unfortunate reality.

Okemos definitely is not a crime zone though. I certainly agree.

Has anyone played this course? I have a tee time in late July and it looks goog but would love some feedback from anyone who has played the course.

I%26#39;m a high teens handicap so just looking to get out there and kick it around and enjoy a beverage or two.

    Grand Haven Golf Club..

    You will love this course.

I would play here just for the experience of it all. : )

Unfortunately, rates haven%26#39;t been low enough to play in recent years. : (

    Grand Haven Golf Club..

looks like the rate for the July timeframe is $55 for 18 w/ a cart. That works for me after playing in Hilton Head and MB the past few summers.

    Thanks for the feedback.

This is a good course, not a great one. In my opinion not worth $50+, maybe $30 in Michigan. I%26#39;m told 20 years ago it was a course to play.. If you need to be close to Grand Haven, it%26#39;s the course to play.

    South Michigan Lake Retreat

    Hi.

We%26#39;re looking for a nice resort/cottage/lodge in South Michigan for a family who likes swimming in inland lakes. We have a young toddler who would love swings, a grassy area etc.

Price not a huge issue. Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    South Michigan Lake Retreat

There is a nice inland lake park, Silver Lake state park, within 30 min W of Ann Arbor..stay at Webers Inn in AA, drive West through Dexter out to Silver Lake(Pinckney recreation area).

Grassy beach, swings etc., wooded hiking trails, good water quality. Stop at the Dairy Queen in Dexter on the way back, for a walk-up window treat. Best season is mid-July to mid-Aug.

See the Hands-On museum, and Univ of Mich Natural History museum in AA.

    Gay community in Saugatuck

I am a gay woman who is moving to South Haven in a month or so. I have heard there is a big gay community in Saugatuck. Can anyone let me know if this is so? I hope so because I feel better living near FAMILY!!! Zoobaby

    Gay community in Saugatuck

    You heard right.

    Gay community in Saugatuck

Probably a larger gay (male) population than lesbian, but certainly, absolutely, yes, Saugatuck is gay-friendly!

Saugie is as gay as a picnic basket

Go to gaysaugatuckdouglas.com for a list of gay owned and gay friendly businesses. There is also a social group called AWARE and a garden club with a majority of gay members...I believe they are called the Lakeshore Garden club.

Hey folks, the original post is from 2006. I am hoping Zoobaby already made her decision! Still, you have provided interesting and useful info. Moms

    Little Traverse Wheelway

    Hello:

We will be traveling to Traverse City and Mackinac Island the last weekend in May. We would like to ride bikes on part of the Little Traverse Wheelway. We need to rent bikes. What is the best part of the trail to bike for scenery and viewing the lake?

I will appreciate any other information that you would offer about the trail.

    Thanks

    Little Traverse Wheelway

The ';bike path';, as it%26#39;s simply called here, is very nice and, for viewing the lake, I like the stretch midway between Charlevoix and Petoskey. I often stop at the rest area south of 9 mile point - leave the car there, it%26#39;s right on the lake - and bike south towards Charlevoix and north to Petoskey, past Bay Harbor. I%26#39;ve not biked the newer stretch near Harbor Springs. For bike rentals in TC, try Brick Wheels or McLains. I%26#39;m going to Petosksey today and if I see a ';bike rental'; location, I post again. Try lunch at Cormacks Deli near the south end of Petoskey.

    Little Traverse Wheelway

You can rent bikes at Revolution Bikes in Charlevoix.

    http://www.revbike.com/

You can also rent in Petoskey.

    or

    http://highgearsports.com/

    Call for rates and details.

I am thinking of biking this path this summer having never done it before. Please let all of us know how you liked it! Thanks, Moms

    Good info so far...

I%26#39;d recommend renting at Bahnhof Sport in Petoskey (800-253-7078 or bahnhof.com) Bahnhof%26#39;s the most reputable sports shop around and rent very good bikes for the wheelway...21 speed hybrid cruisers...very comfortable with front suspension, etc. Rates are 3 hour (minimum rental) $18...full day $25. They%26#39;re right on the wheelway, so convenience is great.

Which way to go is a little tougher decision. Harbor Springs is about 6-7 miles one way from Bahnhof, Charlevoix is more like 15. I like the ride towards Charlevoix, going through Bay Harbor and 9 mile point area, but other portions of the ride can be boring. I like the Harbor Springs ride, especially with a stop off at Petoskey State Park for a swim (well...maybe not in May). The wheelway%26#39;s not yet finished all the way into Harbor Springs which means a short jaunt on the highway. You can avoid this by swinging off at Menonaqua Beach Rd. (possibly just called Beach Rd) for a couple mile ride on a lazy beach road...great views of the bay and very nice homes.

I guess if it were me, I%26#39;d ride to Harbor, mess around town in the shops, have lunch and make the ride back...would make for a nice day%26#39;s trip.

  • Camping in Michigan for novices?

We%26#39;re thinking of spending a few days in lower Michigan, doing some river tubing (probably along the Au Sable?), maybe do a bit of fishing. I know most of Michigan quite well, but we%26#39;re considering using an RV this time and we don%26#39;t know the campgrounds at all. Can anyone make a recommendation for a quiet, family oriented campground (low on the %26#39;party%26#39; factor) with services and local attractions that will keep 16, 13 and 11 year old boys happy? This is an %26#39;extra%26#39; vacation, so we want to keep it on the cheap but still make some good memories.

Alternate locations gratefully accepted! We have no fixed ideas.

    Camping in Michigan for novices?

Editing to add: we%26#39;re travelling in mid-August.

    Camping in Michigan for novices?

I remember loving camping at Burt Lake State Park when I was a teen. Lots to do, lots of other teens, great beach and fun towns nearby....I don%26#39;t think those things have been diminished over the years...only improved. Another idea is Traverse City State Park...lots to do there! Moms

TC would be the ideal destination for lots of different activities. There is tubing on the Boardman, Platte, Crystal rivers within an hour%26#39;s drive-or canoeing. Fishing in them too, as well as the Bay.

Silver Lake State Park is also popular. However, I am not sure about a tubing river. Lot of sand, sun and beach. Lots of go-carts, putt-putt, etc. Sand dune buggy rides. There are also several private parks within town.

Ludington is also very popular; lots of fishing in the inland lake, river or Great Lake; tubing/canoeing; great beaches; bike trails, hiking trails, nature center, water toy rentals; and Ludington has a lighthouse to hike out to and great public city beach. Shopping, pizza and ice cream...lol. However, it is very hard to get into Ludington and most likely August is already filled to capacity.

Grayling is a great town for canoeing and tubing. We love Hartwick Pines State park. Quiet, family oriented to the T; all the history and nature right there in the nature center and lumbering history visitor center/lumberman buildings/virgin pine forest. Hiking; fishing; playground at picnic area is pretty cool; and Grayling has some minor attractions: a fish hatchery, putt-putt. Gaylord has more and it isn%26#39;t far up the road...

The two places I would recommend are previously mentioned.

Grayling - Canoe or Tube either the Au Sable or the Manistee Rivers. State Forest Campground on Lake Margrethe used to be a great family campground. Be aware that they only have pit toilets.

Burt Lake State Park - Sturgeon River for tubing. Rent tubes right across the street and the river empties into Burt Lake at the state park. Putt Putt also across the street. GREAT beach for swimming. Town withing easy walking or biking distance. Great ice cream, homemade chocolates and fudge at Drost%26#39;s. www.drostschocolates.com

As you can probably tell... Burt Lake would be my choice.

Here is the link for the tube/canoe rental for Burt Lake www.bigbearadventures.com

Fantastic! Thanks, all! We%26#39;ll start by looking at the places you have suggested and will surely find the right spot!

Burt Lake and the Village of Indian River gets my double thumbs up!! Burt Lake is easily one of the two nicest, cleanest, best swimming lakes in the state...and HUGE! Indian River%26#39;s a great little town with a lot to offer and the location%26#39;s perfect...two minutes off I-75, half an hour to Petoskey, Mackinaw City and Gaylord...it%26#39;ll be tough to beat Burt Lake State Park for what you%26#39;re looking for.

    Summer's coming

Gasoline prices in South Haven jumped 20 cents ($2.19) over night, just in time for our weekend travelling guests. It has now backed down 4 cents to $2.15/gallon. Earlier in the week it was $1.96 I don%26#39;t know why I did, but I thought we may have been done with this summer price bounce.

    Summer's coming

Wow! I%26#39;m going to have to save my money...I just paid $1.83/gallon. It is crazy how that works in Michigan. We always fill up in Toledo before we enter the state and refill in the Saginaw area before we hit the resort pricing. Seems a little early for this summer price gouge business....

    Summer's coming

That%26#39;s like bringing back Superball. BOUNCE, BOUNCE, BOUNCE ...............................! Nothing new for us Michiganians though.

Rono, at least you get the bounce...

Up here it%26#39;s just ALWAYS high, lol...

Price you pay I guess, to live where everyone else comes to vacation.

    Movies shot in Michigan: suggestions

I am driving a group of 15/16 year old girls to Michigan this summer to celebrate my daughter%26#39;s 16th birthday. I thought that while we drive across the country, it might be fun for them to watch movies shot in the places they will be visiting.

We will be spending time in Ann Arbor, East Lansing, the Northwestern part of the lower peninsula and Mackinac Island (Somewhere in Time is a given!). Any other age appropriate suggestions? Thanks, Moms

    Movies shot in Michigan: suggestions

I don%26#39;t know how good it is, but the first movie filmed on the Mackinac Island was This Time for Keeps with Esther Williams, Jimmy Durante, and Lauritz Melchior.

It sounds like you want to show the movies as you drive across country? Correct?

I doubt This Time for Keeps is on DVD.

The Beverly Hills Cop movies are good (especially the first). Die Hard 2 was filmed in Alpena but it is the least desirable of the Die Hard franchise. But still it is Michigan-made %26amp; NW Michigan at that.

8-mile in Detroit though maybe not age appropriate and IMO not a really good movie.

    I really liked Gran Torino.

They might get a laugh out of how dated Where the Boys Are.

    Good luck

Part of Transformers was shot a Michigan Central Station in downtown Detroit.

Super Sucker with Jeff Daniels was shot in Jackson. It was not a huge hit but it is pretty funny.

Escanaba in the Moonlight is very funny. Michigan%26#39;s Jeff Daniels is in it, and is about ';Deer Camp';. To my knowledge no animals were harmed. One potato, two potato lol (you need an open mind)

While very seldom getting credit ';The Road to Perdition'; had many scenes shot in Saugatuck/Perdition. You will immediately recognize the Lake Michigan shoreline at the end of the movie. Here%26#39;s a Trib article that mentions it.

    Swimming beaches in the UP?

Hi everyone! I have searched this forum and several UP travel websites and can%26#39;t find a concise list of good swimming beaches in the UP. Maybe you can help point the way?

My husband and I are going to the Rothbury, MI music festival July 2-5. We will leave from Chicago, stay in St. Joseph, MI (with family) and then go to Rothbury for the festival. We plan to ride north from there up and around Lake Michigan and come back down through Wisconsin and come home. We have three days and are on motorcycles.

I have spent many summers now visiting and swimming at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, MI and would love to find a place to spend a few days in the UP that is as fun. We were looking at staying near Pictured Rock until we found a small bit on their site that said Lake Superior is often way too cold to swim. Now we are looking at Manistique areas or other warmer water alternatives. We don%26#39;t mind touristy, there is usually a good reason why people swarm! :)

    thanks!

    Swimming beaches in the UP?

    Hello agnusdei,

    Welcome to the Michigan Forum.

Are you looking to swim just in Lake Michigan or are you interested in one of the inland lakes in the UP.

Are you looking to stay at a resort/motel or are you camping. Do you want a place just to swim where you stay.

All along the North Coast of Lake Michigan there are places you can swim. You just pull over and walk down to the beach and jump in. There are road side parks you can stop and swim to. One just West of Manistique is called Roger%26#39;s Park. This has a very nice beach.

Do you plan on touring the UP or just sticking close to Lake Michigan. For example you could ride over to the Tahquamenon Falls, then ride along Lake Superior and stay at a Bed and Breakfast in Autrain. This distance would be about 75 miles.

Thanks yooperbacker! I do believe that you should work for someone in the UP tourism industry. So helpful!

We aren%26#39;t committed to any particular body of water, be it inland lake or large lake. There seems to be so many great options. We will probably need a hot shower and a real bed for the first night after the music festival, but can camp for the following nights.

We were planning to stick to riding along Lake Michigan but will definitely travel farther north for a great destination. I am writing down Roger%26#39;s Park. I found photos of it on Flickr I think? http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=rogers+park+manistique%26amp;m=text

Thanks again for the extensive info.

Having grown up in Escanaba, I have experienced swimming in three area beaches on Lake Michigan (as you%26#39;re heading southward from Munising or Manistique: Van Cleve Park in Gladstone, Ludington Park in Escanaba, and Wells State Park between Escanaba and Menominee/Marinette, WI.

Hunt%26#39;s guidebook-- a great resource-- has been conveniently put online; click on each area/city for more detail (and on attractions within each city%26#39;s/area%26#39;s page):

My favorite is 100 miles west of the bridge just past Garden Corners on US 2. a few hundred yards of sandy beach you can walk out a quarter mile in.Acroos the road is Rosies at Tylenes great family resturant and a dozen rooms for about $30 per night. About two miles on US2 west in the road the Nahma a kinda ghost town which has a great camp ground with a spectacular view has a store and jet ski rentals and a great beach also.

Well I can say from personal experience that Lake Superior is swimmable, though best experienced in August...on a hot day...

None-the-less even then it can be somewhat cold or what a Yooper would call ';refreshing.'; :-)

Lake Michigan on any of the beaches previously mentioned would be much more tolerable.

That said, the driving distance from the northern shoreline of the U.P. to the southern shoreline can be as short as an hour depending on where you start and end. There are few cases that woud be more than two hours apart unless you are going to and from the extreme ends of the peninsula. As an example Marquett eto St. Ignace is three hours and about the same from Marquette to Ironwood.

That might open up a lot more of the U.P. for you to explore if you choose to do so.

YB mentioned the Pinewood B%26amp;B in Autrain on the north shore... I have stayed there...nice place..closer to Christmas and Munising than to Marquette...

Just to throw in distance for you. From Manistique to Seney is 35 miles. From Seney to Grand Marais is 25 miles. So you can go from Lake Michigan to Lake Superior going through Seney in about an hour. I usually travel the roads up here at 50 mph. When your on US 2 or US 28 you will need to travel 55 to 60 but once you are off these main roads you can just relax and do a slow cruise.

    Hello agnusdei,

I am not sure if your still watching this thread or not but I was in Milwaukee last week and on my trip home I past the J.W.Wells State Park near Cedar River, on Lake Michigan and I thought of you.

This State Park has cabins you can rent plus regular camp sites to. Thought you might want to check out the web site.

If you wanted more information you may want to Google Wells State Park. This park is in a nice location.

place for team party after competition

We are going to a trampoline competition May 15-16. We are looking for a place to have a party afterward. There will be about 10 families with kids ages 7-15. I

want somewhere the kids can have fun while the parents can relax. Somewhere like a Gameworks or Dave and Busters would be great. But just a nice pizza place with a big room would be good, too. The competition is at the Grand Rapids Community College so most people are staying near there.

place for team party after competition

There is not really much of anything like that near downtown GR. Craig%26#39;s cruisers is 30 min south of downtown (south on 131, exit at 54th st. Right off the ramp. Left at Clyde Park then on your left in 1/2 mile.) They have go carts, food, mini golf, lazer tag, video games- like a Chucky Cheese but for kids in you age ranges. You might be able to get a group rate with that many people too. There is also the option of attending a Griffins Hockey playoff game or Whitecaps baseball game too.

place for team party after competition

Craig%26#39;s Cruisers is a good option for what you%26#39;re looking for, but it%26#39;s nowhere near 30 minutes from downtown...more like 10 and it%26#39;s an easy drive...South on 131 to 54th St. exit, West 1/4 mile to Clyde Park and South 1 mile to Craigs Cruisers.

They have indoor and outdoor go carts, mini golf, lazer tag, rock wall, bumper cars, great pizza buffet, etc.

Baseball fan needs recs on Detroit...

I%26#39;m a 30-something baseball fan that is thinking about traveling to Detroit in June to see the Tigers.

From reading this site, it looks like the Hilton Garden Inn is the most convenient place to stay after a game.

Can you guys recommend any sports pubs within a safe walking distance of the HGI? I%26#39;m a buffalo wing and beer type guy, so the medium to high end type places are not really my style. I%26#39;d like something that is quintessential Detroit if that makes sense.

Also, do cabs hang out near the hotels or will I need to call one to return to the airport?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Baseball fan needs recs on Detroit...

SPORTS BARS. Cheli%26#39;s Chili Bar (owned by Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings) and the Hockeytown Cafe. Both are within walking distance or the Hilton Garden Inn and both are opposite Comerica Park, both on different streets. Either--or both--would fit your criteria perfectly.

CABS. Detroit isn%26#39;t a big taxi city, but those that exist tend to cruise in the immediate downtown area during events, to hang out at taxi stands by the hotels or can easily be called. You shouldn%26#39;t have any problem for the return to the airport. If your flight leaves very early in the morning, it would be prudent to ask the hotel if there normally will be a taxi waiting outside or if it is better for them to call one for you to assure a timely pick-up.

Baseball fan needs recs on Detroit...

    AUBeachPotato,

I actually just went to a game Friday night and stayed here. There is a sports bar right across the street from the hotel. Chelis and Hockeytown are right across the street from Comerica Park which is a block away from the hotel. These too places a fairly high priced on their drinks.

There will be cabs going down Gratiot but the front desk at this hotel will handle that for you if you want them to.

    too=two

Thanks, Jamerican. Were you happy with the Hilton Garden Inn? Did you have any problems walking to and from the stadium? My primary concern is safety. I will be by myself, and I want to see the stadium area without having to worry about anything.

I wish there was someway I could get over to see old Tiger Stadium.

The area around the Hilton Garden, Comerica Park and the sports bars is safe and, on game day, will have lots of people around as well.

To see what is left of old Tiger Stadium, you could just take a taxi. You won%26#39;t likely be allowed inside, so ask the driver to do a loop around the outside of the stadium, perhaps stopping here and there for pics.

Personally I avoid the bars right around the stadium on game days. They are packed, and gouge on pricing with $5 cans of beer. HGI is a good location. The area is safe for walking, especially on game day.

Before the game, grab a cab (or take a long walk) over to Nemo%26#39;s on Michigan avenue. This is right by the old Tiger Stadium. Have a Nemo burger - one of the best in Detroit. Take a look at what is left of Tiger Stadium, then hop on the free shuttle back to Comerica Park.

After the game, head south on Brush street a few blocks and hit the Old Shillelagh Irish pub. Keep heading south another two blocks and Jacoby%26#39;s is a good German bar with a good beer selection.

Cut one block east (through the alley) over to the Detroiter on Beaubien where you will find another good burger/beer bar. Wander back north through Greektown and the casino. Detroit Beer Company is on Broadway, right around the corner from your hotel, if you like microbrews.

For more essential Detroit, get over to Lafayette Coney Island for a coney at some point. I also like Foran%26#39;s on Woodward (a bit of a walk) which has a great selection of Michigan microbrews.

Yes we were very happy with it. No we did not have any problems walking to the stadium. This area is the main tourist area of Detroit. FYI the bar across the street from the Hilton is a well kept secret. I%26#39;ve gone there a few times on game days. That is actually how I knew where the Hilton was. This bar%26#39;s prices are much more reasonable than the two main ones by the stadium (Hockeytown and Chelis). It is a short cab ride to see old Tiger Stadium.

    Jamerica,

Don%26#39;t leave me hangin%26#39;. Give me a hint or two about the place near the HGI.

    Thanks in advance.

I%26#39;m going to guess that Jamerican28 is referring to the Detroit Pub since it is the closest to the HGI. Personally I have found the service there to be bad to non-existent. We went in one time when they were dead and sat for 10 minutes without being served, and walked out. I even know a bartender that worked there after it reopened a year or two ago and quit because business was so bad.

It has probably been a year since I was in there, so things could have improved.

If you want cheap drinks in a dive type atmosphere, try the Well on Randolph.

    AUBeachPotato,

It is right across the street on Gratiot and decorated with the old English D. I%26#39;d been there a few times before on game days. The service isn%26#39;t anything to write home about and we have never got anything to eat there. I usually sit at the bar so I guess I didn%26#39;t notice the service that much. I noticed the price was much better than Ole Shellaighs, Hockeytown, or Chelis. Since it is two blocks over from the stadium instead of right across the street or in Greektown the prices seem to be better. Stadium is 5 minute walk from there and the beers are 1/2 the price as the other bars I mentioned. Service really isn%26#39;t fantastic anywhere around the stadium on game days as they%26#39;re often swamped. As a matter of fact I had to get up from our table and grab drinks at the bar at Cheli%26#39;s last weekend. The best bar on game days is Mitch%26#39;s. You%26#39;ll must likely pass it coming in if you%26#39;re coming off 75 and then 10. It would be a short cab ride from the Hilton though.

  • Special dinner for 16th birthday!

My daughter turns 16 years old this year. Instead of a party, she wanted to take a group of her friends somewhere. We originally thought New York City but then those ads for ';Pure Michigan'; started running around here all the time and her friends started to comment that they didn%26#39;t know Michigan was so pretty....well, the location of her birthday has now changed to Michigan!

We will be coming to Michigan in late July with her friends. We will be staying on Lake Charlevoix. At the end of the week we will head to Mackinac Island where I am going to surprise her by reserving rooms and staying over night. I am trying to figure out a special place or event for dinner. Here are some possibilities:

Dinner at the Grand Hotel: Is this something memorable that 15-16 year old girls would remember? Is it more like a cruise ship? I can%26#39;t quite tell and would welcome some suggestions....

Dinner at the Woods: My 40th was celebrated here and we have dined here often so it is not a unique experience in that regard but the duck pin bowling and atmosphere are so great....what do you think?

Private dinner at the restaurant at the Inn at Stonecliffe: We will be staying at the Inn at Stonecliffe. I was thinking of reserving the large table in the restaurant that faces the view of the Mackinaw Bridge and having dinner at sunset.

I can evaluate the dinner at The Woods but I need some help with The Grand Hotel. Is it worth the money? Are there any other unique ideas out there?

Thanks to the Mackinac Island DE%26#39;s and everyone else for your help! Moms

    Special dinner for 16th birthday!

Considering that your 16 year old wants to visit Michigan instead of New York City makes me think that any of your dinner choices would be fine. It comes down to the experience you want.

Dinner at The Grand Hotel is, for me, a fun experience. You have to be properly dressed and the dinig room has an atmosphere that is hard to find these days.

The menu is somewhat limited (it is online, but the offerings rotate each evening, so it might take a phone call to find out which menu will be offered on your evening if that%26#39;s important).

It%26#39;s a special occasion type of location for me and we always visit while we are on the island.

    Have a great trip!

    Special dinner for 16th birthday!

I think the GH would offer your daughter and her friends an opportunity to get really dressed up, be entertained by the orchestra they have (which will probably bore them, but hey, that is an adult thing and she is becoming an adult..lol), dine in a historical and beautiful hotel, with wonderful views, and then they can take a horse and carriage ride (?) back to the Stonecliffe. (That is where you stay, don%26#39;t you?) Just my opinion... :)

I think you are both correct. I think we will dine at The Grand. It%26#39;s funny but I called the main dining room today to ask about the children%26#39;s menu because some of the girls have a less diverse palate than what is offered on the adult dinner menu. The woman who answered could not have been nicer. She assured me that any of the girls could order off the children%26#39;s menu if they wanted to and then she e-mailed it to me. I will have to try not to cringe when one of the girls orders chicken fingers or mac and cheese while dining at The Grand!

I am bringing two of the moms as well. They have read about Mackinac Island in various decorating and travel magazines. Both say they hope to get to the Grand Hotel someday. It will be fun to surprise everyone with dinner, dancing and a stroll on the beautiful porch!

    Moms

Good choice. And I forgot about strolling the porch!

    Hey moms,

If I had seen this thread earlier, I would%26#39;ve told you hands down go with the Grand...it just dosen%26#39;t get more special than that...great choice!

One problem though, how are you going to get all those girls dressed up without telling them what%26#39;s going on?

I know that my daughter will think we are heading to The Woods for dinner. These girls like to get dressed up so they will dress up for The Woods. As we leave the hotel, I will have them get into a taxi for our surprise destination! It should be great fun!

Looking forward to finally experiencing the Grand Hotel dining room. Funny, but I have never stayed or eaten there...Moms

The only problem with The Grand is the fact that they won%26#39;t take reservations. They assure me that with 750 seats in the dining room, it won%26#39;t be a problem. I would just like to make sure we get a special table, not in a corner, and I wanted to have a little party favor waiting...something special from the Grand Hotel. Maybe I can contact the concierge for that....suggestions? Moms

Definitely contact the concierge, maybe the day of or a couple of days early. I%26#39;d be suprised if they didn%26#39;t set up a nice table for you...especially with a larger group like you%26#39;ll have.

    Teens and where to stay

Looking for a place to stay that%26#39;s fun for young teens with a pool, breakfast, in town, decent rooms, close to bike rental, etc.

    Teens and where to stay

    Hello julietravel,

Here is a web site that has information about Mackinac Island. You should find some interesting things there.

I am sure others will be by and post with additional ideas.

    http://www.mackinacisland.org/

    Teens and where to stay

The pool part of your requirement does limit your choices. The Lake View Hotel has an indoor pool, as does the Island House Hotel. The Chippewa has an outdoor pool, and the Murry Hotel has a spa deck. Mission Point also has a pool, but it is not downtown.

Depending on when you visit, you might find a package that includes breakfast. Bike rental locations are numerous, though bringing your own is certainly worth considering if it%26#39;s practical.

Downtown is only a few blocks long, so everything is very convenient to you when you stay there.

As Yooperbacker suggested, visit the Tourism Bureau website for links to hotels, bike rentals, attractions, etc.

Also be sure to look at the reviews for Mackinac Island businesses here on TripAdvisor.

We travel to Mackinac Island often with our kids who are now 15, 13 and 11. We prefer to stay out of town at the Inn at Stonecliffe. They offer wonderful suites in the Summer House, an outdoor pool and a great breakfast buffet in the morning. It%26#39;s true that it is not located in town for the shopping but it is located in a very interesting area of the island that many never see. We tend to spend the day in town seeing the sights. We then check in to the hotel, swim, have a happy hour on our balcony overlooking the Mackinaw Bridge (there is a small kitchenette so we are able to bring snacks and drinks along), then we dine at The Woods restaurant. Our kids love the atmosphere and the duck pin bowling offered at the bar.

Its just another idea. If I were to stay in town and wanted a pool, I think I would choose the Lake View. Great location in the middle of it all! Moms

Continuing off of ';Moms'; thought, we like to stay at the Condos out at Stonecliffe for many of the same reasons listed. We like the condos because of the full kitchens. We save money by making many of our own meals.

Otherwise I would agree with the Island House suggestion.

I know this topic%26#39;s been posted before, but I couldn%26#39;t find what I was looking for, so I%26#39;ll post again.

We%26#39;re having a quick overnight stay at the Romulus Courtyard before an early flight Saturday morning. What%26#39;s close by (within 20 minutes or so) as far as good, fun restaurants? We%26#39;ll have our four year old, so it needs to be kid friendly and fun, but we%26#39;re totally foodies so it needs to be good. Any suggestions? Something different, ethnic, maybe sushi or thai or something off the wall?

    Restaurants near DTW

I%26#39;ll try, but can%26#39;t think of anything that totally fits your description. Here%26#39;s a few ideas that are 20 - 25 min away from Romulus. My kids ages 6 %26amp; 8 love the following:

Bahama Breeze - 19600 Haggerty Rd between 7 %26amp; 8 Mile Rds, Livonia. Caribbean cuisine. Fun atmosphere. At times live band. http://www.bahamabreeze.com/

Red Robin, 37701 6 Mile Rd (just east of I-275), Livonia - Fun kid friendly atmosphere - burgers, chicken dishes, cool drinks.

    http://www.redrobin.com/

Thai Basil, 37273 6 Mile Rd approx 1 mile east of I-275, Livonia - Nice atmosphere, great Thai food

    http://www.szechuanempire.com/thaib.html

Haandi Indian Cuisine, 37116 6 Mile Rd, Livonia

    http://www.haandimichigan.com/

    Restaurants near DTW

I would suggest something in Ann Arbor. The Zingerman%26#39;s Road House is excellent. It%26#39;s what I would call gourmet barbeque but I%26#39;m not sure that is the proper description. Excellent microbrews. Other alternatives are any restaurant along Main Street. Most are family friendly and very good. How about Mongolian Barbeque? Gratzi for Italian, Prickly Pear for Southwestern Cuisine, for Ethopian try Blue Nile, for Cuban and Latin cuisine try Cafe Habana. Closer to I-94 try Mediteranno...my husband and I love to go here for excellent Greek wines and their delicious appetizer platter. Other Greek and Turkish options are delicious.

The State Street exit off of I-94 is less than 30 minutes from DTW. Ann Arbor is such a laid back town that most of the restaurants are very kind to children. All of the suggestions I made will welcome your child.

    Have a great time! Moms

Assuming you meant this weekend, I am posting this too late, but you can file it for future use. Try Bangkok 96 in Dearborn for Thai food. Nothing fancy, but very, very good food. It is on Telegraph Road just south of Michigan Ave. Watch close, or you will drive right by.

    Thanks for the posts everyone,

Unfortunately, I underestimated the amount of time my bride needed to shop on the way down (is overestimated ever the case?) and we would up not getting into our hotel until about 11:00. We had a quick pizza delivery and crashed.

    Oh well, maybe next time!!

Did you go to Jamaica, DHC?

Sure did, had a great time...first trip to JA for our little deadhead...she had an awesome time and proved herself a more than pleasurable traveler...already infecting her with our ';travel bug';...lol

Haven%26#39;t had time to do a trip report or resort review yet, but they%26#39;re coming...

    Thanks for asking!

    Downtown Gas Station

    Hi everyone,

I%26#39;m going to be making a day trip into Downtown Detroit from Ontario. I plan on parking at the Greektown Casino while I walk around downtown and check out the various attractions.

I want to take advantage of the low gas prices so my question is where is a gas station in the downtown area or near the tunnel crossing?

    Thanks!

    Downtown Gas Station

There is a Speedway on the corner of Jefferson at I-375. To avoid extra left turns, gas up as soon as you enter the US. Turn right out of the tunnel onto Jefferson. Stay right on Jefferson at the I-375 split (do not get on freeway). Take the first crossover back over the freeway at the Speedway will be right in front of you.

To get to the casino, turn right out of the gas station onto Jefferson. Turn right on Beaubien and go a few blocks to Lafayette.

    Downtown Gas Station

    Canuck2103,

That definitely is the closest gas station and really very quick and easy to get to after you exit the tunnel, but (just so that you know) prices won%26#39;t be as low there as at some other stations in the Detroit area. Still will be cheaper than in Ontario, however.

    South Haven vs. New Buffalo

My husband and I are thinking about escaping Chicago for a 2-night stay in southwest Michigan in May (soon!) and I%26#39;m seeking advice on which town is a better fit for us - South Haven or New Buffalo.

Since it%26#39;s May it will likely be chilly, so beaches aren%26#39;t a priority. We%26#39;re 30 (no kids) and planning on wine tasting, going for walks, reading on a porch and poking around shops. We%26#39;re casual people - we like good food, but nothing fancy. Getting out of the city and seeing some nature and countryside will be nice!

Any advice on what is the better fit as a home base (New Buffalo or South Haven or other?) for us? South Haven seems so much more established (more places to eat, shop) but I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s worth the extra drive from Chicago and the wineries.

    Thanks for the help!

    Rental Property

Looking to rent a house with my family in the Burt / Mullet lake area. Does anyone have any advice on what areas are good, would like to be on the lake, but that is peacful and not busy.

    Rental Property

Sorry I didn%26#39;t get to your post sooner, I%26#39;ve been on vacation.

There are a lot of rental homes available on both Burt and Mullett Lakes. I%26#39;m a real estate broker and would be happy to help with your search, my family actually has a cottage on Mullett we rent out a few weeks out of the summer...what are your dates? Is there a price range you%26#39;re trying to stay within? Will you have a boat with you? Would you consider renting a short distance off the water?

PM me and I%26#39;ll pass along some specific info on cottages. Answers to the questions above will help narrow down where you should look at.

    Rental Property

    Hello travel001,

There is a web site called - Vacation Rental by Owners that has listing all over the United States. My sister has used them and has been very satisfied.

    http://www.vrbo.com/

I use vrbo as well. I also use www.homeaway.com. I believe they are affiliated but seem to have some different houses on them. Moms

  • skin cream
  • vacation horseback riding question

I had a lovely time on Mackinac Island, and saw people of all sizes and ages riding horses around the streets. I would very much love to do that on my next visit, but I am 60 and have never ridden a horse before although I am physically fit. Coud anyone with experience on this offer tips?

    vacation horseback riding question

Cindy%26#39;s riding stables (on Market Street) is the place to call before you head to the island. I am certain you%26#39;d have no problem with their gentle giants! Have them give you a route that won%26#39;t give you any surprises, and enjoy your trip!

    vacation horseback riding question

I also got my horse from Cindy%26#39;s. A very pleasant experience. You will love it. We went on a private ride. They are very careful to match you with a horse that will fit your age/experience. Enjoy!!

It sounds to me like the stables there are quite nice and accommodating for riders. I would definitely try it! I say that because I took up riding at the age of 45 and found out that it was what I was meant to do.

Go for it! I know you will enjoy it!

    Jen,

We rent horses from Cindy%26#39;s, but once from Jack%26#39;s as well, when we visit the island. It%26#39;s nice to ride down interior trails and see sights most visitors never encounter.

As noted in another reply, accidents happen and you sign a waiver releasing the operator from anything that happens to you. Cindy even gives you the option of riding without a helmet (I don%26#39;t recommend that).

State laws require all equine facilities post warnings letting participants know they face injury/death, so just make sure you%26#39;re comfortable with those facts prior to riding.

When we rent from Cindy%26#39;s, a guide takes us out of town then let%26#39;s us go on our own. The horses know the route. Really. I once tried to go down too steep a road and the horse wanted no part of it. Trust the horse. They know the way back to the hay!

A phone call to the stable could answer any of your questions. I imagine guides are also available for the entire trip if you aren%26#39;t comfortable riding on your own. You can also rent a horse and buggy if you prefer that option.

    Have a great trip!

AtlantaPhotog I know you are mostly replying to Brokenback%26#39;s comment, which is good. The post Jen posted was back in August of 2006.

Brokenback had to go all the way back to 2006 to find a place to make the comment.

Actually I have posted this in several locations and believe me if it happened to you, you would be doing the same thing, also Cindy%26#39;s is owned by Jacks, The Gough family. I am an experienced rider and if this accident was the fault of mine I could live with that but when it is the fault of the Livery I can not and if I wasn%26#39;t physically fit the doctors said I would not be walking today. So tell me would you like to see other people or children have to go through that? and when the owners personally told me they would take care of the bills and sent me a letter saying they would and also told me to my face. Believe me I would not wish this on anyone, the pain is constant and I have a slice in my back and it has stopped me from doing some of my favorite activitys and day to day tasks.

Yooperbacker, I thought it was odd that so many people had already commented on it!! I didn%26#39;t catch the date. Oh well. Guess they didn%26#39;t fall off their horse!

Yes, there are so many old posts popping up today with new comments....Did you see the posts regarding Saugatuck? All received new replies to posts from 2006. Moms

I noticed that old post being brought up to. And on the same day. A bit strange.

AtlantaPhotog I would say your right about not falling off the horse. ;)

    Detroit International Jazz Festival 2009

Just got news about the line-up for DJF 2009, and my husband and I expect to return for a third Labor Day weekend.

In celebration of 30 years of presenting jazz, the Detroit Jazz Fest is honoring some leading families of jazz and Detroit’s own history of players and composers. Subtitled “Keepin’ Up with the Joneses” – a nod to the Detroit area’s legendary Jones brothers (Thad, Elvin and Hank)...also features these families -- the Brubeck family, John and Bucky Pizzarelli, the Clayton Brothers Quintet, and T.S. Monk in “Monk on Monk” – a performance honoring the legacy of his father, Thelonious Monk. Other performances by Chick Corea, Sheila Jordan, Christian McBride and Wayne Shorter. The complete line-up will be announced at the end of April.

In %26#39;07 we stayed in the Ren Cen and last year at a vrbo in Brush Park. I%26#39;ll be hanging out on the Detroit forum again as we work out arrangements for %26#39;09.

    Detroit International Jazz Festival 2009

Great post, Pat. Thank you for putting the 30th Jazz Fest on the radar here. This is sure to be one of the most outstanding music events staged in Detroit.

    Detroit International Jazz Festival 2009

Hey, Pat. Glad to see you here! And we%26#39;ll be glad to give suggestions and insight as always.

    Cheers!

    AB

AB, I was hoping you and Tylerarb might still be here to guide me. Even though this will be our 3rd DJF, I expect I%26#39;ll have questions.

Were you thinking of doing the VRBO again? Just so you know, Zaccaro%26#39;s Market closed - a victim of the economy as well as circumstances - wrong place, wrong time.

Also, a few more hotels have opened up since you were here last - The Book Cadillac, the Doubletree Fort Shelby and the Greektown Casino Hotel. That%26#39;s off the top of my head... can%26#39;t think if there are others. The first two are probably the closest to the jazz activities at Hart Plaza.

Too bad about Zaccaro%26#39;s Market. The vrbo where we stayed in %26#39;08 was just blocks away, but because of Labor Day weekend hours were changed, so I didn%26#39;t shop there. We%26#39;ll probably return to the Ren Cen this year anyway.

The jazz festival will reveal more names at a press conference at the Guardian Building in Detroit on Wednesday, April 29.

Hi Pat Picks and welcome back to the forum and to Detroit.

If you just can%26#39;t wait until Labor Day weekend....

2009 Detroit Jazz Fest Artist-in-Residence John Clayton will perform with the Wayne State University Big Band on Friday, April 3, 7:30 PM, at The Music Box in the Max M. Fisher Music Center. Tickets are $20 at the DSO box office, and $23.50 if ordered by phone (313.576.5111) or online at detroitsymphony.com.

See http://www.detroitjazzfest.com/09lineup.html for the 2009 lineup, which was announced on April 29.

    Thanks for the help!

    South Haven vs. New Buffalo

i%26#39;m from nw indiana so i drive past new buffalo to get to so haven...its less than an hr further and there are several wineries along the way...tabor hill, julian (just a tasting room) and others whos names escape me right now but I%26#39;m sure are on the michigan web site...

new buffalo is pretty but I don%26#39;t care for the beach scene as much...the walk from the town to beach is not as fun either...i go occasionally when i%26#39;m pressed for time but its not a fav spot for me

so haven has the north %26amp; south beaches to walk along with a great pier...the downtown is compact with a little (and I mean little ) show that still shows first run movies dirt cheap with great popcorn and sherman ice cream in $1 cups!! Clementines is a fun place to eat...phoenix inn is great for breakfast...julias is a coffee shop with intellegista (sp??) coffee and free wifi...lots of interesting shops...i like the toy stores, antique malls, and props especially...and dulcys is full of all kinds of crazy kitsch!!

there is a maritime museum and a small art institue if you care to get educated...

and the big blue water there is incredible!

guess you can tell who I vote for!!

    South Haven with Young Kids

We%26#39;ve got a 3 year old and a 5 year old, and we heard that South Haven was a terrific place to visit with kids during the summer. We don%26#39;t know anything about the area - what to do, where to stay. We%26#39;re not campers, nor are we the kind to stay in a Holiday Inn. A quality house, condo or inn in a good location sound like our style. We%26#39;d be open to the Yelton Manor, but wouldn%26#39;t want our kids to interfere with the romantic atmosphere it seems to promote. Any recommendations on where to stay mid-August? Activities? Thanks for your help!

    South Haven with Young Kids

Check out southhaven.org. There are lots of houses and condos, I%26#39;ll be back with a couple of websites. Sleepy Hollow is good too.

    South Haven with Young Kids

rono can cook up some ideas for you--yelton manor is not a place for kids--there are lots of great condos walking distance from the lake--kids love the sand and water and it%26#39;s great to just walk home for naps or whatever--packard park on the no side also has restrooms for shaky potty trainers!! I%26#39;ve had my kids there (not quite when they were that young--didn%26#39;t discover so haven till they were older) and we love it!!

When you say ';quality house'; that probably lets out my suggestions cuz i%26#39;m all about the bargain!!

    Check out

    vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/…south-haven

    homeaway.com/south-haven/…find.squery

Also Shores, Jaqua, and Lakeshore Lodging offer quite a few condos and homes.

rono you are too much...i just got an idea for a new rental for me off those suggestions!!*HA*

    Northern Michigan TA Meetup

I%26#39;ve heard a few people talking about wanting to do a meetup sometime this summer and I figure since I%26#39;m in the area, I%26#39;ll be the catalyst to get this thing off the ground.

I%26#39;d like to get some suggestions from those interestted in attending as to dates, locations, etc.

I was thinking maybe it would be a good idea to try and make it as centrally located as possible, perhaps Indian River? It%26#39;s right off I-75 and just about a half hour from most of the area attractions (except TC).

    What%26#39;s everyone think?

    Northern Michigan TA Meetup

Indian River works for me. Perhaps Vivio%26#39;s?

But my only firm dates in the area this summer are June 10-12. I hope to get up there again before the summer is over, but may have to wait until fall. I understand if you have the meet up later in the summer.

Last July, bruizer_man from Lansing called for a get together in MC, but I was the only TA to visit his party in the marina on the 4th.

    Northern Michigan TA Meetup

We have tenative plans to be in Charlevoix July 12,13,14. Possibly could make it up another time.

Love it! I know I will be there July 11-19. I will be chaperoning a group of 15/16 year old girls during the week of July 26. I also know that I will be in the Lansing area in late June.

Would love to meet all of you! Moms

Say it isn%26#39;t so, Rono....we are both scheduled in Charlevoix at the same time! Wow I might get to finally meet you and share a good glass of wine! Moms

Really, I wasn%26#39;t going to bring up our trip because I thought you were going later in July. We%26#39;ll need to work this out. I%26#39;ll let you know for sure as soon as I know. :)

Oh Boy...you two are going to be in the area during Blissfest...July 10-12, you really should check it out...blissfest.org...they%26#39;re an amazing organization that really does an enormous amount for the arts here in Northern Michigan...and they put on a great little festival. If it%26#39;s at all within the realm of possibility I highly recommend you check it out at least for a day. Check out the map, the location%26#39;s close to Cross Village, Lake Michigan and one of my favorites...Legs Inn.

As for the dates, those sound good to me...tough to beat the weather in mid-July!

WE will be gone the 2nd week of July to OHIO...OMG! Maybe be able to catch you all that weekend though of the 10, 11 and 12 of July? Hope it all works out. :)

MrsRedPony and I will be in Harbor Springs from July 15th-21st. We usually try to drive down to Charlevoix as a day trip, unless we go up and spend a night or two at Mackinac Island. I%26#39;d love to connect with any of you who will be around. Sorry we%26#39;ll miss you Sue. Would you trade Ohio for %26#39;Up North%26#39;?

Not sure we can Red, but we will look at it and see. Possibly that weekend you are here we can see you 2, we could drive up somehwere for a day trip?? Keep you informed as time draws near..be great to see you and the Mrs. though! (And the rest of the MI gang..)
