survey about Detroit

Hello everybody!

I%26#39;m not sure if it is the right place to post my request, but at least, I thought, I%26#39;ll have a try.

Anyway, I wanted to poll some of you Detroit citizens about your hometown.

But therefore it is first of all necessary to explain, why I am wanting to do this:

This year is my final one at school. Consequently I%26#39;m going to make my diploma , the so-called ';Abitur'; in Germany, soon. For this I have to write a research paper on a certain topic, and because I have the ';Advance Course English I chose a topic that deals with ';English';. The topic is called: Patriotism in the United States: the presentation of American cities in selected songs and poems';. Accordingly one of these cities I deal with is Detroit.

Apart from a quite theoretical section, I wanted know what you, living or even being raised in Detroit, think about it.

Therefore I prepared some questions:

1.What do you love about Detroit and why?

2.What do you hate about Detroit and why?

3.Do you have any personal memories or feelings that you associate with, for example, a special place in Detroit? To make a long story short: what does the city mean to you personally? is there kind of a personal connection?

4.Would you prefer living in another city? If yes, which one and why?

5.What would you miss the most if you ever had to leave?

6.Is there anything you would like to change in your city? If yes: what and how?

7.What is your personal definition of patriotism and nationalism? Is there a difference?

8.So, would you call yourself a patriot or a nationalist and why?

You do not have to keep to the answers that exactly. Just let me know, what Detroit means to you personally. Just what is life like there and what is so particular about it, especially for you :)

Thanks in advance to everybody for taking your time. Your answers will be of real big importance to me!

Silvana...

I%26#39;d be happy to participate in your survey. I think you need to include your email address tho, so the people who respond don%26#39;t have to share their ideas with other posters on this board.

you%26#39;re right

but I think there is no possibility to enable this feature in my settings, isn%26#39;t it?

I%26#39;m looking forward to your answers :)

What a great idea! (a chance for people to say positive things about Detroit).

1. I love that Detroit has a rich history and that it has an island.

2. I hate that Detroit does not have a booming downtown area.

3. The city means a strong foundation and sense of identity to me. I go to college in Illinois and I make sure everyone knows that I am from Detroit because it is a part of who I am. It is where I got an education and the ability to compete in the private college atmosphere. It is the reason why I am on the Dean%26#39;s List.

4.I have been to Chicago, Peoria, and Bloomington, Illinois as well as Kansas City Missouri places in Ohio and other parts of Michigan. I liked Kansas City the best but I don%26#39;t know if I%26#39;d want to live there. I would like to live in Detroit if I make good money.

5.I would miss the festivals, the fashion, and the hairstyles.

6.I would like to change the sense of pride that people take in the city as well as the transportation system. I would change the way people feel about the city by holding events that foster pride in city residents. To help the transportation system, I would compare our system to that of other cities and determine where they get additional funds to run their systems.

7.Patriotism is pride for your country. Nationalism is more like devotion to those ideas.

8.I would call myself a little bit of both. I take pride in the city of Detroit and I am devoted to making a difference there in whatever way I can.

Thanks

I love Detroit because we are the home of automobiles, the motown sound, the Henry Ford Museum and some of the best people in the world.

I hate the defeatist attitude many folks hold as to Detroit being able to come back as a world class city. And I hate that Detroit can%26#39;t get a break in the media. If something goes on here the whole country will hassle us about it.

Downtown is special to me, I spent many days at the former Hudson store as a child and now I spend many evenings going to the restaurants in the downtown area. The Detroit River is very special to me also. Being able to sit and watch the river and look at Windsor, Ontario, Canada is a treat.

No I would not prefer to live anywhere else. Well sometimes when it is very cold in the winter I think about somewhere warm.

I would change the way the city is run, I would get things accomplished and not just dream about it. I would have a much better mass transportation system. I would also make it easier for businesses to open in the downtown area.

I think patriotism is love for my country and nationalism is pushing to get my country ahead.

I am probably a bit of both, I love my country and want it to get ahead. But I don%26#39;t want that to happen at the cost of other countries.

Good Luck and I hope you can visit our wonderful city sometime for a killer steak at Carl%26#39;s Chop House!

Another weird TA problem. This topic also is showing up as brand new this evening, but there is nothing new at all!
