A little more information will help us to make recommendations. What is the main purpose of your visit (tourism, business, family, etc.)? Month of your visit? How many days will you be staying? Will you be renting a car or relying upon taxis/public transportation? What is your per night budget for hotel?
Downtown Detroit has hotels, restaurants, museums, sports venues and bars, but very little shopping. Suburban areas such as Troy and Birmingham have hotels and lots of upscale shopping, restaurants and bars, but having your own transportation is almost a necessity in those adjacent cities.
