Weekend Get Aways from Detroit

Hi : Need some help...I am looking for a weekend getaway with couple of hours drive from Detroit..Travelling with Spouse, 4 yr old %26amp; 6 months old daughter.

I have already been to Mackinac, Traverse city and also visited Sandusky,Ohio (great wolf).

Thanks in advance

Weekend Get Aways from Detroit

I would go for either Harbor Country (The New Buffalo / Union Pier / St. Joe Area).... Saugutuck... or Shipsewena Indiana.

Weekend Get Aways from Detroit

I second St Joseph. We have a great Kid%26#39;s museum -- Curious Kids, lots of downtown places to eat and wander including the Chocolate Cafe for a fun treat, and a fabulous toy store. There is also a wonderful lighthouse pier perfect for walking on and watching the sunset. The beach right near the downtown and next to the lighthouse pier is Silver Beach. It is very popular in the summer time and has a beach concession and playground. Even in the spring the playgound on the beach is a big hit with young children. You don%26#39;t say when you plan to come. Summer weekends are filled with events and the downtown area will be filled with very kid friendly public art. Last year it was little cars that kids could sit and play in -- I can%26#39;t remember what the theme is this summer. Check out www.sjtoday.org.

My gang enjoys Frankenmuth. There are hotels with indoor pools and waterparks, shopping, boat rides, one of the largest Christmas stores in the world, and delicious family style chicken dinners at the Bavarian Inn or Zehnder%26#39;s Inn. It can be a lot of fun.

Another option is Toledo, Ohio....yes, I said Toledo. The zoo is fantastic as is the Art Museum. The Art Museum has great mummies and a family art center for hands on activities. www.toledomuseum.org/Learn_FamilyCenter.htm

Have dinner at Tony Paco%26#39;s or at one of the restaurants on the water. Take a boat ride down the Maumee River to Lake Erie. We have stayed at the Holiday Inn in Maumee or South Toledo. They, too, have a wonderful indoor waterpark.

Just some ideas! Moms

I totally agree with Moms on both of those places.

Frankenmuth also has a petting farm you might want to look into. It also has a small wilderness type zoo.

Toledo also has some nice botanical gardens that at one time had some areas and activities for children. It was very enjoyable for mine when we did go there, but that was quite a long time ago. A great place to stay is the lodge at Maumee Bay State Park, about 20 minutes outside of Toledo, on Lake Erie. It has everything you possibly could want: inland lake (with excellent swimming, water toy (boat, canoe, kayak) rentals; inland ponds to fish or canoe on; a great bike path network; an excellent boardwalk thru a swamp as well as the nature center; indoor and outdoor pools; playground; store; beach and toy rentals on Lake Erie, activities and various shows for kids (mime%26#39;s, art, magic); golf; nearby horseback riding (yes, I know you have a baby..); and a restaurant in the lodge. They also have indoor basketball and raquetball courts, I think. Pool; ping pong and large TV in the lodge lobby with plenty of seating for rainy days if you want to move around. They also have a good drive-in theater near there. Just a thought!

thanks for all the guidance..i will plan for frankenmuth..it sounds interesting

When we go to Frankenmuth, we always enjoy shopping at the Birch Run outlet Mall. It is only about 15 minutes from Frankenmuth, just off the I 75 at Exit 136. There are about 145 stores, something for everyone! Here is a website with details.

Love Frankenmuth.... dinner, hit the cheese shop or bakery, there is a new coffee shop that is good in the little building that used to be an arcade on the main drag. Just n of Zhenders. Willi%26#39;s sausage shop is just awesome!!! Bronner%26#39;s Christmas store is a must stop if you have never been!

But what I really wanted to add is the Military museum is very good too. Michigan people and their service history.
